报告摘要:
Organicsemiconductors are the key active components in organic electronics [e.g.,organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs), solar cells, photodiodes (OPDs), field-effecttransistors (OFETs), sensors and lasers]. Depending on the applications, thesematerials may need to be highly luminescent, electro-active andelectrochemically/thermally stable, and/or with high charge carrier mobilityand desired HOMO and LUMO energy levels. If processed from solution, organicmaterials require sufficient solubility to form good-quality thin films.
Luminescentorganic materials have fundamental importance and significant industrial interestin OLEDs application like our next generation TVs and hand-held devices such assmart phones, tablets and gaming devices displays. Given the superior displayquality of OLEDs, it is important to note that in these OLED displays, eachmonochromatic sub-pixel needs to be driven and modulated by a transistor, typically using a high mobility polycrystalline silicon-based transistorbackplane. Processing the backplane is, however, completer and more expensivethan those of deposition of OLED components, meaning, the use ofpolycrystalline silicon backplane defeats the key low-cost advantage of OLEDs.To overcome this, new approaches have been reported and among these, organiclight-emitting field-effect transistors (OLEFETs) show great potential, enablingto integrate the switching and emission functions in a single device.
Because of atrade-off nature of the switching and emission functions, this makes thedevelopment of efficient OLEFET materials highly challenging as to achieve highcharge mobility in a device, active organic semiconductors need to be closelypacked in the film, which is generally detrimental to light emission. Thisexplains why most organic materials with high mobilities are not suitable forOLEFETs as they suffer from poor light emitting efficiency. Similarly, mostexisting highly efficient OLED materials are not fit to OLEFETs due to lowcharge carrier mobilities.
In thispresentation, our strategies to achieve high charge carrier mobility (with highON/OFF ratio) and high external quantum efficiency (with high brightness) ofOLEFETs will be shown. Our progress on materials development/synthesis forsemi-transparent displays and organic lasers will be also discussed.
