讲座摘要:
The increasingdemands for clean energy have triggered tremendous research interests onelectrochemical energy conversion and storage systems with minimumenvironmental impact. Electrolytic water splitting holds the promise for globalscale storage of renewable energy, e.g., solar and wind in the form of hydrogenfuel, enabling the continuous usage of these diffusive and intermittent energysources when used together with fuel cells. Nevertheless, the widespreadapplication of water splitting technology has been severely constrained by theuse of precious metal catalysts, such as oxides of ruthenium and iridium forthe anodic oxygen evolution reaction (OER), and platinum for the cathodichydrogen evolution reaction (HER). This presentation concerns our recentprogress in developing non-precious metal-based, carbon-based and metal-organicframework (MOF)-based water splitting catalysts, as well as our strategies forenhancing the efficiency of these catalysts by nanostructuring to a levelcomparable to that of precious metal catalysts. The commercialisation of someour catalysts in water electrolysis industry also will be discussed.
