Department of Energy Science and Engineering (DESE) was established based on the New Energy Design Institute of SZU and the undergraduate degree program in new energy science and engineering had begun since 2012. This undergraduate program was the earliest one in Guangdong province and had been recognized as one of Representative Programs in Strategic Emerging Industries Among Guangdong Higher Education Institutions(2015). Over the past 7 years, DESE has established a municipal scientific research platform, Shenzhen Key Laboratory of New Lithium-ion Batteries and Mesoporous Cathode Materials, with more than 20 million CNY investments in relevant scientific research and education. The research directions include solar energy/photovoltaic utilization, hydrogen and fuel cell, biomass energy technology, energy storage technology and energy efficiency monitoring and evaluation. DESE currently has 17 faculty members, including 4 professors, 3 associate professors, 5 lecturers and 5 assistant professors. Most (>70%) of the faculty members in DESE have overseas education background or working experience in Hong Kong, U.S.A., U.K., Denmark and Sweden, etc. They have undertaken more than 50 national, provincial and municipal research projects as well as the educational reform projects such as Guangdong Quality Project, and published more than 300 SCI-index research papers.
DESE conducts close production-study-research cooperation with enterprises (e.g., Sunwoda, Shenzhen Hynovation Technology, Shenzhen Gas and Chitwing Technology) in the field of product R&D and applications. DESE has also developed scientific collaboration and long-term joint academic programs with several renowned universities or research institutions such as Zhejiang University, Hong Kong Polytechnic University, Hong Kong University, University of Manchester and Technical University of Denmark.
